Night Shift Darling, Oil on canvas, 64 x 80 cm

HENK SERFONTEIN
Night Shift Darling

In "Night Shift: Darling" Serfontein continues his investigation into the marginal South African landscape. His nightscape paintings are an investigation into the South African landscape in transition. The overlooked often become iconic images in his works in which he not only investigates actual place but rather emotional space. His paintings are archetypal and transcendental and act as a catalyst to collective memory. Serfontein has exhibited widely and his works can be found in private and major corporate collections in South Africa and abroad.

The term realism is difficult to define. Just because you can see it does not necessarily mean it exists. Facades of flawless radiance and smooth skin pervade copious depictions of humans on billboards and other forms of media, turning humans into G-ds, as is de rigueur in society. Rather than conceal Ruan aims to magnify the attributes of the face. By intensifying the features on one’s face, he attempts to draw out the subject’s vulnerability and to an extent their humanity. Ruan's modus operandi consists of using photographs as reference points, not to create realistic reproductions, but rather stylistic representations. Backgrounds are kept minimal, so as not to divert attention from the subject. The eyes induce a sense of presence and entices to confrontation.

Most of his earlier works were created with graphite pencils but he has since shifted to charcoal.
